History

The Association of Evangelicals of Liberia dates back as far as 1964 when the vision was ignited by a visiting international and renowned American evangelist of the Assembly of God, Paul Olson, who during a one-week Gospel crusade held at the Anotoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia, motivated Christians in Liberia to unite and evangelize Liberia in obedience to the Great Commission of Jesus Christ.

As a result of the motivation from this great Evangelist, the vision was caught by five (5) denominations, which later in 1968 organized themselves into a body, then known as the “Liberia Evangelical Fellowship”.

The five organizing denominations were: the Assembly of God Mission, Free Pentecostal Mission, Open Bible Standard Mission of Liberia, Inland Mission and the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM – ELWA).

The Evangelical body later changed its name to the Association of Evangelicals of Liberia (AEL). The association was set as an inter-denominational fellowship.

Later it was transformed into an association after broadening its objectives.

The sole purpose of organizing the association is to evangelize Liberia and beyond, and to show Christ-like compassion to all in need.

The first secretary of the then fellowship was Rev. A. Jonathan Shea of the SIM-ELWA.

When the association established its secretariat in 1989, the first General Secretary was Gonwon T. Dahnweih of Scripture Union Liberia.

AEL is a member of Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA), and the World Evangelical Fellowship (WEF).
